After Joelle was done washing the dishes she went ahead and dried it with another low quality paper towel and then brought it into the other room and set it down on the now clean table, beside the box of healthy whole grain cereal. She found a clean spoon in the box and sat down to eat. She poured her cereal and then just sat there for a minute before she remembered that she needed milk for it. They had both worked very hard all their lives, unfortunately they had never been blessed with children, much to their distress when they were younger, but they had learned to live with that, and planned the parts of their lives which they could control, down to the finest detail. Few people think about getting direct bike insurance but a bike, like a car, can be involved in accidents causing harm to a third party or even damage to property. So many of us in the UK just don't think of these things - a bike is thought of as a leisure item and not something that in use could end up causing liability for damage caused. A friend of mine was caught out by this. He should really have been more careful and certainly have taken out direct bike insurance, since he was using the bike for commercial purposes. He had a small business working as a bike courier about the city. One of the big advantages of a bike in the city is that you can get around quickly, since you are relatively unaffected by ordinary traffic congestion. He'd just picked up a parcel of documents from a law firm and was couriering them to the law courts through the morning traffic, which was mostly stationary as is so often the case here in the uk, so he was zipping along in the gutter beside the cars when this woman laden down with shopping stepped out right in front of him. He didn't see her because, instead of stepping out from the pavement, she stepped out from the traffic between two of the cars. He just didn't expect it and ran slap bang into her sending bags, bodies and, of course, the bike all over the pavement. No one was seriously hurt, fortunately but, needless to say, she was not very pleased and threatened to sue. She found out the name of the law firm and contacted them. They were not pleased either, especially when they discovered that, lacking direct bike insurance he was not adequately covered. For several weeks it was a major worry for him, but in the end it did just fizzle out. It could have been a lot worse and he was, actually, quite lucky. After that he got a number of things sorted out, direct bike insurance, health cover, commercial liability and numerous other stuff. As I say, he was quite lucky and he learned his lesson well. The additional cover and work that he did actually ended up putting his business on to a much sounder footing and made him appear far more professional to his clients and he is now doing well, although for some time after the incident he was very nervous about getting on the bike to go anywhere.

My youngest son was rapidly approaching his sixteenth birthday, and although I was looking forward to it for him, in another sense I was absolutely dreading the day. For years, all he'd dreamed of was the day that he would be able to legallydrive a moped on the road.
